Where We Call Home

The air is warmer than normal but still carries the chill of early spring as I sit down at the tables beneath the tree that is longing to burst forth with leaves. It’s one of those days where the Kentucky weather is trying to fool us… it likes to do that often. Winter still lurks around the corner but my best memories of walking downtown are always when the sun shines and promises the weather we all want. The wrought iron tables are one of my favorite places to sit on the square in Scottsville, watching the cars travel through the four way stop or seeing people bustle in and out of the downtown businesses.

I’ve lived here my whole life and even though sometimes it changes as quickly as the seasons do, one thing remains the same… Scottsville, Allen County is home. One thing I remember people always say when they visit is how picturesque and almost Hallmark like the downtown of Scottsville is. And to be honest it really is, with the historic buildings of brick and mortar, to paved pathways and the strategically landscaped areas that give it the green a town so desperately needs to keep. You can walk from business to restaurant to the library, places that all call downtown Scottsville home too.

There’s the historic Lyric on Main, which hosts concerts and shows, the first Dollar General Building, the Read Building with its rich history and so much more. And then there are the events like First Fridays, Jacksonian Day, Norrofest, and many more. To live here and love it here is to see the beauty that is and the potential that exists.

As I sit there and watch this place I love, I think about the rest of the county. Not only is the square an amazing place but it would be awful not to mention how much lies just outside of the downtown and even further outside of the city limits. Places like Dumont Hill, many historic sites with untold amounts of stories in themselves, markets with fresh produce, restaurants with some great food and shops to explore. We even border Barren River lake and the State Park.

There is so much… Scottsville, Kentucky offers so much more than you might expect… small town charm and rural views.

I'll finish with this… Before I close my computer, Scottsville may be home and I may be partial but I am proud of the town we have because it is part of me and it is all of our citizens. It is something we want to share, commemorate, and memorialize. Something we can pass down with all of its history and its future on to the next generation.
